FOR THE YOUTH OF THE SUN26·27·28·29
Fraternity of Sound came out as the necessity of a strong feeling, the feeling of a festival made first and foremost for all the devotees of sound, existing to host music long awaited and missing from the concert history of Greece and also of the need for a true festival that unites different genres but with coherence both in the experience and the deeper aesthetics expressed by the creators. In reality it’s what we have been doing from the beginning and now with FOS it is realised in a single breath, fierce love and persistence materialised in Sound.
The case of Croatian Amor has left a unique impact on experimental music in recent years. Being the most important of many artistic aliases of Danish experimental musician Loke Rahbek, who is co-running the Posh Isolation label (with over 200 releases over the past 8 years), it is the one retaining the greatest level of communication with his audience, in both practical and conceptual level. The distant cries of both the cold industrial as well as the retro synth pop past have given space to the more humane face expressed in the warm ambience of his latest "Love Means Taking Action" LP. The immediately following 12" is called "Finding People". Everything seems to have taken their course. This is the first time he appears as Croatian Amor in Athens.
Colin Potter has been a living legend of underground experimental music long before he became an integral member of Nurse With Wound. Specifically from the early 80's, and the first days of his improvisational IC studio through which he recorded his historical first cassettes. With the use of the synthesizer, drum machine and guitar as his trademark, he released electronic music monuments such as "Two Nights" (1981), "Where Where House?" (1981) and "A Gain" (1982), creating at the same time a huge cassette circuit that emerged through his own ICR Distribution which constituted a common space of expression for some of the most important artists of experimental music ever birthed by Great Britain. Since 1988, he has been helping to create the darkest and most atmospheric moments in Nurse With Wound's discography, being Steven Stapleton's most steady partner over the years. This is the first time he will appear in Athens.
OPENING RITES26 OCTOBER 2017
If we had to place a bet, we would say that the first name mentioned in the discussions about modern industrial/power electronics that "is not a simple remake of decades bygone and brings something new to the table" is that of Puce Mary. Frederikke Hoffmeier, with already three personal LPs and several collaborations with artists such as Dan Johansson (Sewer Election), Rodger Stella (Macronympha) and Loke Rahbek (Croatian Amor), conjures up all the glamour and aesthetics left in dead industrial and delivers it into our era. The slanted glances at noise, field recordings, harsh vocals, drone openings, and a tendency towards ambient sound were perfected over time, and the personal sound of Puce Mary reverberates in its finest form in 2016's "The Spiral". Something even more aggressive is her live appearances.
If we had to describe to the same person the music recorded by Panagiotis Spoulos as Dead Gum since 2009, we would point out that the game here is about exploring the boundaries of guitar sound with every probable and unlikely escape to improvisational noise, latent momentum towards the lo-fi, with strange use of voice and with maximum dedication to psychedelic collages. The sound of Dead Gum has been developed through the experience of many concerts and studio experimentations over the years, with many cassette releases and cdrs leading to 2014's "Gainer" LP and the upcoming "META" LP. Spoulos is also a member of Wham Jah, Reverse Mouth and $oft $kull, while at the same time, for 15 years, he has been running the experimental record label Phase! Records, home of everything described above. And of many many others.
JAY GLASS DUBS
It's hard to answer a person asking you what sort of music is made by Jay Glass Dubs, colloquially known as Dimitris Papadatos (KU, The Hydra). Knowing how broad the sound spectrum from which he is influenced is, and that to call it "experimental" is not enough to clear things up, the job of explaining becomes even more difficult. The multidimensional approach towards dub is the general idea, but even this is lost as time passes throughout the tracks and the fragmentation of individual moments continually leads you to a different sense of what is happening and - most importantly - of what is about to happen in the next second. The atmosphere is certainly gray and urban, the dancefloor not full and yet not empty, the space being definitely intimate. Perhaps the title "Dislocated Folklore," his latest release of Tapeworm (with a sold-out first pressing, for those who understand what it means for Tapework to re-release you) describes it much better.
THE SOFT MOON
Undoubtedly at the very top of their sound, Luis Vasquez personal project that became an international live experience returns to its loyal fans in Athens to present new and old material and with their latest record about to be released.
The Soft Moon will headline the White Day of Fraternity of Sound.
NURSE WITH WOUND
“The legend of Nurse with Wound has been forging the international experimental scene for the past 40 years, affecting it and changing it forever. Steven Stapleton’s legendary audio outfit.
It is a true honour to finally be having them for the first time in Greece at the White Day of Fraternity of Sound Festival.
The Finnish lunatics of Circle are probably the best live band in the world. With a myriad of different releases and experimentations that range from ambient, kraut/psychedelic rock to their very own NWBHM, Circle are an unforgettable and defining live experience for everyone who has witnessed them.
With their latest album “Kill City” just released by Southern Lord, Circle are also appearing for the first time in Greece at the White Day of Fraternity of Sound.
Johnny Tercu and his crew spend time in a moist, rat & cockroach infested basement playing something loud and heavy. He ventures pointlessly into nothingness with the same sense of no future as most people in Athens these days.
After endless hours of jamming, Kooba Tercu has distilled the ideas developed over a couple of years in ten songs resulting in something that sounds incredibly familiar but maybe not quite like anything you've heard before.
The chaotic colour palette to be thrown over the White Day of FOS by Kooba Tercu is to build a surreal bridge in a psychedelic beyond which is further connected with Circle and then crushed back into darkness by Nurse towards the Moon.
The extremely talented Linnea Olsson, known from her work with Beastmilk/Grave Pleasures, presents her latest solo work by the name Maggot Heart with a full live band. Linnea’s heavy & dirty post-punk, a child of Killing Joke, Poison Idea, Voivod, Black Sabbath & the Sex Pistols, is the perfect opening we could imagine for Fraternity of Sound’s White Day.
New York’s legendary noise rock outfit Unsane have been smashing through time with unstoppable force since 1988. Also for their first time in Greece and with their just released new record ‘Sterilize’ by Southern Lord, to co-headline the Black Day of Fraternity of Sound.
Standing in-between sludge, noise and psychedelic ritualism, UK’s Ghold are among the most interesting contemporary bands currently out there. With their upcoming latest album Stoic to be released by Crypt of the Wizard, and also for the first time to appear live in Greece, Ghold should not be missed by anyone who wants a truly special live experience.
The Athenian heavy rock duo of Omega Monolith is not a band but a time machine of unique origin changing the psychological rules of time and space with electricity and resonance. Omega Monolith are very dear to us and the progression of their music is very much connected to our esoteric lives. Omega Monolith will be presenting completely new material to be released on the upcoming (and next) record.
Pharaoh Overlord are Circle’s stoner rock alter-ego. Or as Circle would say, minus the rock & the stoner. They have also released a record named Circle, while Circle released a record named Pharaoh Overlord. Finnish are strange. We love the Finnish.
Pharaoh Overlord to set the controls & add the colours to the Black Day of Fraternity of Sound.
“Rock and Roll Consciousness for a rock ‘n’ roll heart. Thurston’s sonic world has been haunting my dream life since an early age; very few musicians have ever affected me in such a way. Thurston Moore Group to me expresses all that Sonic Youth stood for, especially through T.M.’s approach to sound, but in a more personal and recent way. But beyond words and reason, there will be feeling.” – S.T.
Ben’s musical career has been one to stand on its own. A true pioneer of sound, Frost creates primordial sonic worlds with his own primal elements, which sometimes echo emanations of our world and unveils them with undeniable strength to our world, with each live moment being a momentous experience.
Ben Frost returns to Athens to co-headline the Blue Day of Fraternity of Sound with a new EP and full LP by the name of “The Centre Cannot Hold” that was produced by Steve Albini and a special A/V show that’s collaboration with Marcel Weber (MFO).
Drew Mc Dowall is nowadays a member of Compound Eye (also featuring Tres Warren of Psychic Ills) and he also recently released "Collapse", his debut full length album as a solo artist. Having spent the 80's as a member of Psychic TV, and the first half of the 90's as a full-time member of Coil (on the same time that the band was leaving its industrial past behind), Drew is one of the reasons why "Astral Disaster" and "Musick to Play in the Dark" are not just a couple of the best albums of the 90's, but also emblematic and influential to every form of musical and artistic expression we're aware of. Having appeared in Athens, one year ago, Drew McDowall always leaves us slack-jawed with astonishment, when performing, which is why we can't wait for his forthcoming participation in Fraternity of Sound Festival.
Having just announced a great project, concerning the release of two separate albums on the same date, via up-and-coming record label United We Fly, Greek post / ambient / cinematic outfit Afformance is undoubtedly in its best shape to date. The release of "Pop Nihilism" and "Music for Imaginary Film #1" is scheduled for October 20, 2017. Fraternity of Sound Festival will be a chance for the band to present their brand new material (in very special live adaptations, as they say) in front of the Greek audience.
